A BRIEF HISTORY - Since the 16th century, a famous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary known as Mother of Mercy (Mater Misericordiae) has been venerated in a small chapel above the Gate of Dawn, the last standing gate of an ancient city wall that once stood around Vilnius, Lithuania. For many generations, the icon of Mary, Mother of Mercy, has arguably been Lithuania's most important religious, historical, and cultural national monument. Pilgrims from all over Eastern Europe and beyond have been making their way to the Gate of Dawn for hundreds of years to venerate this miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For this reason, Vilnius has been known for centuries as the “City of Mercy.” The Gate of Dawn is also the place where the Original Image of Divine Mercy was publicly exposed by Bl. Fr. Michael Sopoćko for the first time in 1935 during the first unofficial celebration of the Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday).
