Original Oil Painting of the Shrine of Divine Mercy
Original Oil Painting of the Shrine of Divine Mercy
There are so many things that can be said about why this painting is so special, but the most important one is that it was painted in Vilnius before the Vilnius Shrine was on the radar of most people. The priest in the painting is Bls. Fr. Michał Sopoćko, who often rode his bicycle around town. Before the Shrine was restored and consecrated as the Shrine of Divine Mercy, it was Holy Trinity Church. Fr. Michał was the pastor of Holy Trinity Church until 1947 when ł had to escape Vilnius on the last train to Białystok. The church was closed by the Soviets and remained closed until 2004. In the background is the Holy Spirit Church, a where the Original Image of Divine Mercy was venerated until the canonization of Saint Faustina.
